What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy is also known as Low Level Laser Therapy, commonly known as LLLT, Low Reactive Laser Therapy or Laser Photobiostimulation, is a form of phototherapy which involves the application of monochromatic and coherent light to injuries and lesions to stimulate healing.


How do Cold Lasers work?

The Cold lasers utilised at Ellenbrook Chiropractic and Wellness Centre are a Class 3B Cluster Laser . The laser is placed directly over the injured area for a determined period of time depending on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser unit.

During this time, the non-thermal photons of light that are emitted from the laser pass through the skins layers (the dermis, epidermis, and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin). This light has the ability to penetrate greater than 5 centimetres below the skin at 200mw and 850 nm. This is useful for healing:

Sprains & strains
Wounds and abrasions
Haematomas
Ligament & tendon injuries, bowed tendon
Inflammation
Joint injuries
Myofascial trigger points, pain points and deep-tissue acupuncture points
Chronic & acute pain
Non-union & small-bone fractures

What are the benefits of Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy has been proven to provide exceptional healing and pain relief in the beginning stages of injuries and for chronic conditions when compared to any other electrotherapeutic process. It is an attractive form of treatment for both human athletes, especially those involved in professional sports, due to the prospect of shorter recovery and lay-off times.


How quickly does Cold Laser Therapy take to work?

Cold Laser Therapy is not something that works over night. Patients don't always get full relief after the first treatment as it sometimes takes multiple treatments depending on the condition.


Can any Health Professional utilise these types of Class 3B lasers?

In Western Australia, only Chiropractors, GP’s, Physiotherapists and Dentists have access to utilize these types of lasers. This approval is only given after the above health professional has completed the necessary safety training. The laser device also has to be approved and registered with the Department of Health. The cluster lasers utilized at this clinic are registered with the Western Australian Department of Health.

Dr William Taylor is also qualified and registered with the Department of Health to utilize this cold, class 3B laser therapy.

Be careful with LLLT or cold laser less than 3B. Most studies do not support the use of these lasers in pain and inflammation.
